Follow these important guidelines to make sure your food is stored safely:

  • Pack and store food in the refrigerator or freezer within two hours of cooking to reduce the risk of contamination from sitting at room temperature.
  • Store leftovers in airtight, leak-proof containers.
  • Store leftovers in shallow containers (transfer from a large pot of soup, for example) to allow them to cool quickly and evenly, inhibiting bacteria growth.
  • Eat leftovers within four days (or freeze leftovers that won’t be eaten within four days).
